People Friendly. Planet Friendly.
Virgin America is making flying good again with our people friendly service and planet friendly operations and initiatives. As the only airline headquartered in California, Virgin America launched in 2007 with the goal of building a successful airline that also makes environmentally-sustainable practices part and parcel of its business model – from the newest and one of the most carbon efficient fleet operations in the U.S. right down to the use of organic hand-soap in our airplane bathrooms. As we continue to build our airline and reinvent domestic air travel, we remain focused on innovative ways for our planes and our guests to reduce our carbon footprint. As part of this collective effort, Virgin America would like to invite you to help offset your travel by contributing to verified carbon offset projects in California and elsewhere in the U.S. through our nonprofit partner Carbonfund.org. For more on Virgin America’s Sustainability Principles, check out http://www.virginamerica.com/va/html/sustainability.pdf.

Just What Is An Offset?
Even though Virgin America's fleet is already among the most carbon-efficient in the industry, air travel still affects our environment. By purchasing a carbon offset, you can help reduce the environmental impact of your flight’s carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions by investing in projects to reduce CO2 elsewhere in the U.S. (See Virgin America’s specially selected projects below for more on how your voluntary contribution will be put to use).

Inland Empire Utilities Agency Biodigester

Project #1 -- Dirty jobs really can be clean
Biodigesters capture the methane that’s emitted when manure decomposes. The biodigester operated by the Inland Empire Utilities Agency in the Chino Basin (California) collects manure from ten area dairy farms and is responsible for reducing more than 8,000 tons of CO2e from the atmosphere every year, while also protecting the quality of the region’s groundwater.

IdleAire, Inc.

Project #2 -- No longer idly standing by
The innovative IdleAire, Inc. Truck Stop Electrification project reduces tailpipe emissions from some of the heaviest emitters of all: the 18-wheelers that transport our consumer goods all over the country. IdleAire, Inc. installs a small device in trucker cabins that eliminates the need to keep the engine running for power during rest stops. The technology in this device allows truckers to heat and power the interior of their truck, run the radio and check email without forcing the engine to burn diesel, saving a gallon of diesel per hour of operation.
