Still looking for a Halloween costume?  Clean Energy vs. Dirty Energy Halloween Costumes!

Know what’s really scary this year?  Our dependence on dirty energy sources.

We put our heads together and scoured the internet to find the best energy-themed costumes out there.  So pick your team: clean energy sources (AKA the Good Guys) versus dirty energy sources (AKA the Bad Guys).

The Next Generation of Environmentalists: Carbon-Free Kids

The Next Generation of Environmentalists: Carbon-Free Kids

(A Special Report By Kory Kramer, Senior Climate Change Specialist)
One month ago we received an email from a group called Carbon-Free Kids.  The email, from someone named Ruthie Gopin, said she had recently founded the organization with the aim of raising funds to make every member CarbonFree® and to raise awareness about the problem of global warming.  They had raised the money to make their first contribution to Carbonfund.org, enough to make one member carbon neutral.  Could we please send a representative to their event to accept the donation?

As a leading carbon offset provider, we’re used to receiving requests like this and unfortunately are not able to make a showing at every event.  While we appreciate, and indeed depend on, the donations we receive to support our variety of climate-friendly projects, we aren’t able to jet around the country making appearances at every carbon neutral gathering.  Besides, wouldn’t that travel need to then be included in the event offset as well?

As I prepared to reply to Ruthie with the standard response as outlined above, a phone call came through: “There’s a Ruthie Gopin on the line.  Can you take it?” Hmmm, I thought, that name seemed familiar.  Ah, yes, I’ve exchanged a couple of emails with this person; something about an environmental group for kids.  Across the line came the voice of a well-spoken, very polite, 12-year-old girl.  Ruthie Gopin–the founder of Carbon-Free Kids–was calling to confirm the attendance of a Carbonfund.org representative at their upcoming group meeting.

Happy Birthday Carbonfund.org!

Five years ago, carbon offsets were below the radar of, well, almost everyone.  But here and there a few people were aware of their great potential to help the planet, among them Eric and Lesley Carlson.  Thanks to their dream, Carbonfund.org turned five years old on September 23!

Carbonfund.org would like to thank the many people who have made it possible for us to exist. So far, with the help of our 900 partners and the over 450,000 individuals we have offset on behalf of, we have been able to make a real difference, including offsetting 3 billion pounds of CO2.

With your help, Carbonfund.org will offset 3 billion pounds of carbon and way more over the next five years.  Our mission remains the same as always: to end global warming!

CarbonOffsetList.org Launches With Multiple Carbonfund.org Projects!

Environmental Defense, one of the most respected names in environmental advocacy, recently launched a new website: CarbonOffsetList.org. CarbonOffsetList.org is an online resource to help businesses and consumers identify and purchase carbon offsets that represent real reductions in greenhouse gas emissions.

Carbonfund.org is thrilled to have four (count ‘em!) projects on the list, two more than any other provider (not to brag).

Earthwatch Kicks Off Beat the Heat Climate Change Campaign

Carbonfund.org Partner Earthwatch has launched a new, first-of-its-kind campaign: Beat the Heat.  Through Earthwatch’s model of pairing members of the public with environmental researchers around the world, Beat the Heat offers a chance to fight global warming head-on. Its climate change expeditions put people on the ground to help threatened species, habitats, and resources. You can help change the global climate for good—and change your life in the process!

Androids and Google Help Carbonfund.org Fight Global Warming

Have you ever thought about winning a huge contest for something you created?  In early 2008, Google opened up a contest to see who could design the coolest programs using Google’s new Android software platform.  Months and 1,700 projects later, Ecorio, an Ontario based software company, proved themselves as the grand prize winner.  Their project: make a mobile phone application that empowers individuals to fight global warming with carbon offsets from Carbonfund.org.

Attention Students: Make a Difference Through NWF and GoGreenTube’s Chill Out Contest

The National Wildlife Federation and Carbonfund.org partner GoGreenTube are partnering together on their Chill Out Video and Essay Competition.  GoGreenTube is the video hosting site that offsets carbon through Carbonfund.org for each video you watch.

Chill Out is a chance to tell the world how your campus is solving the climate crisis. Campuses across the country are taking steps to show going green is not only necessary but it also makes for a really good time.

And if that wasn’t enough incentive, your entry could win you grant money and the chance to be featured in the Chill Out multimedia broadcast in April 2009. Students, faculty and staff are eligible to participate and the deadline is November 30th, 2008 so start shooting today!

(And don’t forget to offset your dorm room with Carbonfund.org’s Dorm Offsets!)

How to Get Rid of That Old Cell Phone Safely, Offset Carbon AND Get Cash

Want to be a Good Steward of the Outdoors?  Stay Clean Responsibly With Action Wipes

Good outdoors hygiene doesn’t have to be disposable.  Action Wipes help you clean and conserve.

What are Action Wipes?  Picture traditional baby wipes, but with a crucial difference: they’re reusable.  They’re extra big and extra thick so you don’t have to throw them away after one use.  And when the time comes to send them on the way, the fabric they’re made of is recyclable.

And of course, Life Elements, maker of Action Wipes, is offsetting its business through the CarbonFree Partner Program.  Offsetting was always a key component of the Action Wipes plan. “For us it’s important we’re offsetting what we’re doing,” Martha Van Inwegen, founder of Life Elements, said.  “We chose Carbonfund.org because it’s an easy, simple and cost effective way to get involved and do our part.  I didn’t have to reinvent the wheel.  The program was already in place.”

How to Be a Part of the Solution By Doing What You Do Anyway

Last year, Americans spent over $966 billion on new consumer goods—70% of our gross domestic product.

Imagine if even a small percentage of that went to carbon reduction projects—millions of trees could be planted.  Economies of scale could drive the price of solar and wind power below coal, leading to a market revolution.  Instead of worsening the problem, our consumer society could help fund solutions.

This vision is a little closer to reality thanks to Carbonfund.org partner myFREEoffsets.com.  myFREEoffsets.com invites you to help solve this problem by continuing to do something you probably do anyway: shop online.
