Genesis Forest Enables Automaker to Offer Carbon Offsets and More

[Silver Spring, MD – November 19, 2008] Carbonfund.org, the nation’s leading nonprofit carbon offset provider, announced today that it is partnering with Hyundai Motor America to offset the emissions of all 2009 Hyundai Genesis cars sold in 2009. This innovative program will help to reforest and conserve 3,000 acres of tropical forest in Brazil, a country that has seen rapid deforestation over the last 50 years. The Hyundai Genesis Forest will provide the carbon offsets to the Genesis line as well as create local economic opportunities, improve the regional environment, and help preserve biodiversity.

The 2008 Presidential Election: What It Means for Global Warming

The election is over and the results are in: Barack Obama will be the 44th president of the United States.

What does that mean for global warming and the carbon market?

President-elect Obama’s platform included a much-needed plan of action to combat global warming (see our article from the last issue), including setting a goal of reducing U.S. carbon emissions to 1990 levels by 2020 and by 80 percent by 2050 through the use of a cap-and-trade system, and funding a 10-year research renewable energy research program to the tune of $150 billion.

Report from Green Festival 2008

Carbonfund.org was on hand for Washington, DC’s Green Festival 2008.  Green Festival, a joint project of Global Exchange and Co-op America, is the nation’s premier sustainability event.

All day Saturday and Sunday, Carbonfund.org personnel staffed a table on the event’s main floor, greeting visitors, handing out literature and brochures, and answering questions on everything from global warming causes to carbon offset projects to certification and verification standards.

Through GreenFest, Carbonfund.org reached out to hundreds of individuals.  The event was so popular that the supply of literature was exhausted by the end of Sunday!

Carbonfund.org thanks everyone who turned out for the event and welcomes all the new subscribers to our newsletter, MyClimateMinute.  Be sure to visit our website for the latest information on how to reduce what you can, offset what you can’t.

Show Your Thanks for the Earth with a CarbonFree® Thanksgiving

Thanksgiving is all about seeing food, family, and friends, and being grateful for the good things in your life.  With that in mind, here are a few tips on how to show your thanks for planet Earth this November by greening your Thanksgiving.

1. Turkey Free? Turkey (and meat in general) has a very large carbon footprint.  Shed tons of carbon in no time by cutting out turkey from your big meal.  Many great meals don’t use meat—look for delicious squash recipes and nut bakes, not to mention Tofurky!  If you just can’t go without, find an organic/free-range/local turkey.

Love Football, Fight Global Warming

Autumn is here in all its glory. For many, this means the triumphant return of football season. Our Sundays are filled with men in helmets, bar-b-q, chips and beer. Afternoons that were once spent tending the garden or fixing that busted shelf are now devoted to the three-hour holy event known as a home game (Editor’s Note: Go Skins!).

But just because it’s football season, we can’t forget about the environment. On the contrary, football and environmental stewardship can go hand in hand and help you have a better time this Sunday. Here are five quick and easy tips to help you save the climate on game day.
