Spotlight on CarbonFree Shipping

Carbonfund.org offers businesses a number of ways to partner in reducing and offsetting carbon.  The CarbonFree Shipping Program, going strong for over a year and a half, is one of the most successful.

This issue, MyClimateMinute profiles two CarbonFree Shipping launch partners, Better World Books and evogear.com.  These companies are a big part of the reason why the CarbonFree Shipping Program is such a great success.

Better World Books, based in Mishawaka, IN, was a launch partner in Carbonfund.org’s CarbonFree Shipping Program.  Founded by three college friends, Better World Books is a self-sustaining for-profit social venture whose mission is to capitalize on the value of the book to fund literacy initiatives locally, nationally and around the world.

BetterWorld.com offers almost 2 million used books for sale online. These books are stored on reused library shelving in a former paper plant. Buying these books helps to build schools, fill libraries and sponsor girls’ scholarships worldwide. With free shipping in the USA and $2.97 shipping worldwide, BetterWorld.com offers great value for the conscious book buyer.  And it offers great value for the eco-conscious book buyer, too: Better World Books offsets all its shipments with CarbonFree Shipping.  “2007 was a great year for us, and through the CarbonFree Shipping program we were able to offset 2,400 tons of carbon,” said Xavier Helgesen, Co-Founder, and Vice President of Business Development.  “We’re looking forward to offsetting even more in 2008.”

Based in Seattle, Washington, evo was founded to bring high quality action sports products and lifestyle clothing to thousands of customers. With a flagship store in the Fremont district of Seattle and an e-commerce site at www.evogear.com, evo offers gear and clothing for skiing, snowboarding, wakeboarding and skateboarding.  evo carries a variety of brands, including K2, Billabong, Burton, Arbor, Nikita and Ezekiel.
In the weeks around Earth Day, evogear.com offered a triple-match promo.  For every $0.50 a customer spent offsetting shipping, evo threw in another $1.50.  Over the promo period, evogear.com saw a 20% increase in the number of customers choosing CarbonFree Shipping.  That number skyrocketed to triple the average number of CarbonFree Shippers on Earth Day itself: a Triple Double!  “We were really excited by the response we got,” said Will Swales, Director of Corporate Social Responsibility.  “The CarbonFree Shipping Program has worked out really well for us, our customers, and the environment.”
