Surf’s Up, Carbon’s Down: San Francisco Surfrider Foundation

Surfrider is a nonprofit organization dedicated to the protection and enjoyment of the world’s oceans, waves and beaches.

When the San Francisco chapter of Surfrider decided that offsetting its footprint was part of being a good steward of the surf, it turned to Carbonfund.org.

The San Francisco Surfrider Foundation, a local chapter of Surfrider National, decided to lessen its carbon impact in two ways. First, it joined Carbonfund.org to offset transport to and from meetings and events. Second, it is urging its members to offset transport to and from local and exotic surf spots. The average cost to offset local surf travel is about $40 per member.

San Francisco Surfrider is also involved in an array of local activities that help protect and improve the coast in San Francisco, particularly Ocean Beach at the western edge of the city. In the fall, Ocean Beach is a world-class surf spot, and surfers travel from all over the world to enjoy the waves. However, the beach suffers from its proximity to the city.

Some of the beach issues include sewage overflow from Marin County; garbage from visitors and garbage dumped at sea; run off from rain storms; and beach erosion. San Francisco Surfrider is fighting these issues through volunteer efforts including monthly beach clean ups, fire pits established for bonfires, storm water stenciling, and awareness events.
