Keep the Adventure, Lose the Carbon: Pangaea Travel

Pangaea has been receiving a lot of attention recently because of its green position in the travel industry. Pangaea offsets all its clients’ vacation travel, be it by air, rental car, or train.

But here’s what makes Pangaea different: it doesn’t charge its clients anything for this service. That kind of commitment is rare.

Pangaea was committed to offsetting 100% of its clients’ travel, and it knew this wouldn’t necessarily happen if clients were asked to foot the bill.  “We are the only travel company in the nation offsetting all manner of travel, free of charge, that we know of,” said Chris Tharp, co-owner of Pangaea.

Tharp researched offset providers to find an organization that could deliver, and found Carbonfund.org.  “We were very impressed with how transparent Carbonfund.org is in terms of where money is being donated, in what amount, and in frequency,” he said. “A lot of organizations are not so thorough and forthright. We’ve been really happy with our partnership.  It has helped define who we are, and we look forward to continuing the partnership for years to come.”

Offsetting isn’t the only way Pangaea is “greening” its clients travel.  Pangaea also gives back to local groups or projects that are active in the areas in which clients are traveling. Pangaea believes in sustainability as much as it does in minimizing the environmental impact travel causes the world. For example, when clients travel on a vacation to the rain forest in South America, Pangaea donates money to the Rainforest Alliance. This, too, is a free service that comes along with the more common travel agent services such as booking client tours, hotels, and rental cars.

“My fellow co-owner Jessica Finley and I started this business with the premise that we wanted to get involved with travel coupled with sustainability and lessening the impact travel has on the environment,” said Tharp.

Pangaea is offering MyClimateMinute subscribers a $25 rebate on any tour or cruise booked through Pangaea—in addition to “greening” their travel at no charge.  To take advantage of the rebate, visit http://www.pangaeatravel.net/contact.php, and submit the code “pangaea-rebate” in the Anything Else box along with your contact info. Or call Pangaea toll-free at 1-866-PANGAEA and reference coupon code “pangaea rebate”.
