The Coastal Society Offsets with Carbonfund.org

The Coastal Society is one of the nation’s premier organizations for bringing attention to issues affecting that important boundary where land meets sea: the coast.  Its distinguished history includes running one of the longest running series of coastal conferences in the world.

When The Coastal Society decided to offset the emissions associated with its 21st conference (TCS 21), it turned to Carbonfund.org.

Established in 1975, The Coastal Society (TCS) is an organization of private sector, academic, and government professionals and students dedicated to actively addressing emerging coastal issues by fostering dialogue, forging partnerships, and promoting communication and education.  There are four student chapters at Duke University, East Carolina, University of Rhode Island, University of Washington, and a state chapter housed at the University of Hawaii. TCS members are passionate about bountiful, beautiful coasts and oceans.

TCS also organizes one of the longest running series of coastal conferences in the world that explore not only problems and threats by innovative solutions. Keynote addresses, concurrent sessions, and field trips serve to provide scientific information relevant to solving contemporary coastal problems, integrate science, management and policy, present case studies, and encourage the sharing of experiences and lessons learned.

For the past 25 years TCS has offered coastal practitioners unparalleled opportunities for personal growth and learning. Bringing together members of the organization and other key people in the field of coastal zone management from all over the nation and around the world is a critical part of its mission.  However, TCS realizes that the impact of so many miles traveled is significant. This year, the organization decided to offset the emissions from the travel, food production, and hotel and facility use associated with its 21st conference.

Today, key issues in coastal zone management include green house gas emissions, global warming, sea level rise and other potential impacts to coastal habitats and communities. By partnering with Carbonfund.org to offset the carbon dioxide emissions associated with conference activities, TCS is demonstrating its commitment to the theme of its 21st conference: Coastal Footprints: Minimizing Human Impacts, Maximizing Stewardship.

“TCS members are committed to exploring and investigating options such as renewable sources of energy and energy efficiency to limit and reduce our ecological footprints, whether on the sandy shores, along the beaches, or elsewhere,” said Judy Tucker, Executive Director of The Coastal Society.  Tali Engoltz, who led TCS’s Green Committee for TCS 21 added, “We chose to offset with Carbonfund.org after researching several options. TCS wanted to support a non-profit; we felt confident in the third party verification; and the staff of Carbonfund.org explained how emissions were calculated and offset using a variety of projects such as renewable energy, energy efficiency and reforestation projects. The emission calculator worked perfectly for our conference needs.  Finally, the staff was especially helpful and understanding of TCS’s need to pay after the conference when we had funds from registrations to cover the costs of offsetting.”

The conference will be held at the Crowne Plaza Redondo Beach, Los Angeles, California, Sunday, June 29 - Wednesday, July 2, 2008.  For more information, please visit www.thecoastalsociety.org.
