Enter to Win a New Beetle; Benefit the VW Carbon Neutral Project
Volkswagen and Barneys New York inspire the spirit of the ‘60s to offset carbon emissions.
Holiday campaign gives away special edition New Beetle to benefit the Volkswagen Carbon Neutral Project.
Volkswagen of America, Inc. is proud to announce its partnership with Barneys New York for the retailer’s “Have a Hippie Holiday” campaign, a tribute to the free-loving creativity and iconography of the 1960s. As a focal point for the campaign, Volkswagen along with Barneys Creative Director Simon Doonan, have commissioned artist John-Paul Philippe to custom-paint a one-of-a-kind New Beetle inspired by the era of peace and love, and the original Volkswagen Beetle.
And to cap off the holiday season in style, Volkswagen has donated the featured New Beetle as a prize for one lucky winner, with sweepstakes entry tickets available through Barneys and all entry proceeds being donated to offset carbon emissions. It’s all part of the Volkswagen Carbon Neutral Project, a partnership with Carbonfund.org (the nation’s leading nonprofit carbon-offset provider) to make it easy and affordable for anyone to calculate his or her carbon footprint and purchase verifiable carbon credits to offset it. The project was initiated by Volkswagen in September 2007 and is thus far responsible for the planting of 278,496 new trees in the Lower Mississippi Alluvial Valley — better known as the VW Forest — accounting for 413,609 tons of offset carbon emissions to date. All thanks to the contributions of the full Volkswagen community.
The one-of-a-kind New Beetle is featured in imagery in all of Barneys’ holiday marketing materials, including windows, shopping bags, holiday mailers, and gift cards. “While the counterculture of the late ’60s produced a host of cultural icons, none captured the vibe more poignantly than the Volkswagen Beetle,” says Doonan.
Tim Ellis, Vice President of Marketing for Volkswagen of America, Inc., explains, “The New Beetle giveaway, and subsequent donation to the Carbon Neutral Project, is not only something that is close to our hearts at Volkswagen, but it also underscores how the green movement can be traced back to the original hippie movement of the 1960’s.”
