Earthwatch Kicks Off Beat the Heat Climate Change Campaign
Carbonfund.org Partner Earthwatch has launched a new, first-of-its-kind campaign: Beat the Heat. Through Earthwatch’s model of pairing members of the public with environmental researchers around the world, Beat the Heat offers a chance to fight global warming head-on. Its climate change expeditions put people on the ground to help threatened species, habitats, and resources. You can help change the global climate for good—and change your life in the process!
“Climate change is the defining challenge of our generation,” said Ed Wilson, President and CEO of Earthwatch. “Earthwatch is about engaging people in science that matters. We need to reach out to as many audiences as possible—especially those in our own backyard—educate them in the understanding that they can make a difference, and give them the tools they need to do so.”
The two-month Campaign runs through October 14, 2008.
Earthwatch Institute, the world’s largest environmental volunteer nonprofit organization, engages people worldwide in scientific field research and education in order to promote the understanding and action necessary for a sustainable environment. Earthwatch supports science by offering members of the public unique opportunities to work alongside leading field researchers around the world.
Beat the Heat’s climate change expedition possibilities include: observing the lives of fur seals in Alaska’s Bering Sea, monitoring coral reef health on a remote Bahamian island, and exploring the fascinating world of caterpillars in various locations like Arizona, Ecuador, and New Orleans. The event and campaign features another “first” for Earthwatch: it is encouraging people to volunteer in local climate change events in the New England area—including non-Earthwatch events, such as urban tree plantings and coastal clean-ups, which speaks to how strongly the organization views the significance of the mission.
“Climate change is happening everywhere, not just within the locations of Earthwatch expeditions, and our mission is to widen the access point for all people to get involved in working together to build a sustainable future,” said John Jorgenson, Earthwatch’s Director of Marketing and Communications. “The window of opportunity to make a real difference will close if people don’t act now. We want to use this Climate Change Campaign as a platform to step up our interaction with local nonprofits, and to inspire action, not apathy.”
Earthwatch offsets 100% of its staff travel through Carbonfund.org. In addition, it encourages its 4000 volunteers, who travel annually to 130 different project sites all over the world, to offset their carbon emissions.
