MIT Researchers Say Global Warming is the Number One Environmental Issue
Global warming is receiving more attention than ever in 2006. More Americans rank global warming as their greatest environmental concern – tripling from merely three years ago.
“An Inconvenient Truth” and the media attention surrounding it has certainly been a boost for the issue in the US. It has thoroughly educated a vast audience from all over the country regardless of political affiliation; however, there is a more practical reason for the overall shift in public opinion. Starting in January of 2006, the debate over global warming ended as the opposition retreated under fire from a myriad of reports confirming the steady increase in temperature. The changes are caused by human activity, and they are linked to CO2 concentrations.
The debate is now over how bad the problem really is. Some researchers say we may be able to minimize the impact if we act now while others claim we have already reached a point of no return and the only thing left to do is sell off beach front property.
The weight of public opinion will certainly play a significant role in future legislation regulating carbon emissions.
