Our Carbon Offset Projects

Carbonfund.org supports three types of carbon offset projects; each type plays an important role in the fight against climate change. The projects Carbonfund.org supports are third-party certified to meet the same high standards that thousands of companies, organizations, and governments rely on to ensure quality environmental protection.

Project Types

• Renewable Energy & Methane Projects
  Renewable energy offsets support projects that help to reduce the amount of energy we need to produce from fossil fuel sources like coal and oil.
• Energy Efficiency & Carbon Credits
  The cleanest unit of energy is the unit you never use. Energy efficiency is the cheapest and fastest way to reduce our dependency on fossil fuels and save money.
• Reforestation & Avoided Deforestation
  Forest-based projects actually reduce the amount of carbon that’s in the atmosphere. These projects sequester carbon dioxide emissions from the atmosphere and have many co-benefits for the community and local wildlife.

Gardner Sanitary Landfill Methane Project

Location: Gardner, Massachusetts
Project type: Methane Destruction
Standard: Chicago Climate Exchange

As landfills harbor methane from trash, the project destroys the landfill methane, which is approximately 23 times more potent as a greenhouse gas than carbon dioxide. Read more>>

 

New Bedford Landfill Gas-to-Energy Project

Location: Greater New Bedford, Massachusetts
Project type: Landfill Gas-to-Energy
Standard: American Carbon Registry / Environmental Resources Trust’s Monitoring, Reporting & Verification Protocol and the Chicago Climate Exchange
Verification/Validation: First Environment, Inc.

This project produces approximately 3.3 megawatt hours of clean electricity from landfill gas. The project not only produces power for the regional electricity grid, but also reduces the amount of methane released into our atmosphere. Read more>>

Truck Stop Electrification Project

Standard: American Carbon Registry / Environmental Resources Trust’s Monitoring, Reporting and Verification Protocol
Verification/Validation: Environmental Resources Trust

The Truck Stop Electrification Project is designed to reduce diesel emissions and save trucking companies the cost of fuel that would be used while idling. Carbonfund.org supports this unique nationwide program, which is estimated to save up to one gallon of diesel an hour per truck. Read more>>

Tensas River National Wildlife Refuge Reforestation Project

Location: Tallulah, Louisiana (Northeastern Louisiana)
Project type: Reforestation Project
Standard: Voluntary Carbon Standard & Climate, Community and Biodiversity Standards with Gold Distinction
Verification/Validation: Rainforest Alliance

This project is restoring native hardwood forests to a region in Northeastern Louisiana that once was covered by dense forest. It is restoring the habitat for estimated 400 species of mammals, birds, reptiles, amphibians and fish, including endangered/threatened species, such as the Louisiana Black Bear and the Florida Panther. Carbonfund.org helps the Tengchong Conservation Carbon Project sequester around 170,000 metric tons of carbon dioxide. This 1,093 acre forest-based project was the first to earn the Climate, Community and Biodiversity (CCB) Standards' Gold Distinction. Read more>>
