Unique Program Offsets Carbon Emissions Generated by CSRwire’s Business Operations

Every press release CSRwire sends is now CarbonFree™, with CSRwire supporting climate-friendly and carbon reducing projects with Carbonfund.org. This partnership marks the launch of Carbonfund.org’s CarbonFree™ program.

Innovative Carnegie Mellon Partnership Develops New Way to Calculate Shipping-related CO2 Emissions

Silver Spring, MD - November 16, 2006 – A pioneering program to offset shipping-related carbon-dioxide (CO2) emissions, Carbonfree™ Shipping, is being launched today, according to Carbonfund.org. The program was designed in conjunction with Carnegie Mellon University’s Green Design Institute. It involves a breakthrough method for calculating shipping-related carbon dioxide emissions. The first four companies to participate in the program are BetterWorld.com, Evogear, 3r Living, and alonovo.com.

How the Program Works

When a shipment travels from a warehouse to its destination, fossil fuels are burned, producing CO2.  CO2 is one of the primary gases contributing to climate change.  Carbonfund.org worked with a research team at Carnegie Mellon to design a proprietary method for determining how much CO2 is produced by each shipment. 

The shipping industry moves billions of units every year and accounts for more than 600 million tons of CO2, according to US government figures. This is more than the CO2 emissions for the entire country of Canada. The Carbonfree™ Shipping program has the opportunity to revolutionize how this industry deals with its carbon emissions by providing an easy and affordable offset solution. A typical package will cost just a few pennies to offset the climate impact, depending on the weight of the shipment, the method of shipment, and the distance the package will travel.

How Carbon Offsetting Works

The initial program partners – BetterWorld.com, evo, 3r Living, and alonovo.com – have agreed to “offset” the CO2 created by their shipments.  Carbon offsets zero out CO2 emissions from one source by reducing the emissions from another.  For example, Carbonfund.org uses offset funds to support renewable energy projects such as wind and bio-fuels that reduce or offset CO2.  Carbonfund.org also supports energy efficiency and reforestation projects that effectively rendering the activity “carbon neutral”.  Offsetting helps underwrite the development of a renewable energy infrastructure. 
Starting today, all shipments from BetterWorld.com will be Carbonfree™, Evogear.com and 3r Living will offer the Carbonfree™ option to their customers; alonovo.com is integrating the option into their platform.

“Plant a Tree for Me” Program Will Offset the Carbon Dioxide Produced Through Powering Customers’ Computer Systems

LAS VEGAS, Jan. 9, 2007 —Dell, The Conservation Fund and Carbonfund.org today announced a joint, global carbon-neutral initiative to offset the carbon dioxide produced when customers power their computer systems.  Called “Plant a Tree for Me,” the program allows customers to make a donation that will be used by the two nonprofits, The Conservation Fund and Carbonfund.org, to plant trees in sustainably managed forests. Dell’s commitment marks the first time a major corporation has given its customers a way to offset the emissions associated with the electricity used by their computers.

“We applaud Dell’s leadership for its commitment to offset the carbon footprint of its computers,” said The Conservation Fund’s president, Larry Selzer.  “Climate change has emerged as one of the dominant environmental issues of our time, and Dell’s industry-leading efforts to address this challenge, and its invitation to its customers to join in this initiative, serve as a model for corporate environmental stewardship in the 21st century.”

Native trees and forests help fight climate change as part of their natural processes. As they grow, trees absorb carbon dioxide from the atmosphere and convert it into oxygen. In addition to trapping the dangerous gases that cause climate change, these new forests help to protect water quality, restore wildlife habitat and enhance public recreation areas.

Through the program, a customer donation of $2 for a notebook and $6 for a desktop computer will offset carbon dioxide emissions equivalent to powering the average computer for three years.  Dell will remit 100 percent of the donations received from the “Plant a Tree for Me” program to The Conservation Fund and Carbonfund.org to be used to plant trees. 

“Dell recognizes that offsetting carbon dioxide emissions with tree planting is an effective and inexpensive way to fight climate change,” Carbonfund.org executive director Eric Carlson said.  “The beauty of this program is that anyone can do it and make a difference.”

According to Carbonfund.org, carbon dioxide emissions today are at their highest levels in recorded history, covering over 650,000 years, and are 40 percent higher than they were before the Industrial Revolution.

The “Plant a Tree for Me” program is available now to Dell customers making new computer purchases.  It will be available in February to U.S. consumers and in April to global consumers for any brand of computer.

IMD REDUCES AND OFFSETS ITS CARBON EMISSIONS

 

 

IMD, International Institute for Management Development in Lausanne, Switzerland initiates new green initiatives including a carbon offsetting program.

Lausanne, Switzerland, 23 January 2007 – With its Forum for Corporate Sustainability Management (CSM) IMD has a long history of supporting ecologically and socially sustainable initiatives among partners in its Learning Network. According to Peter Lorange, President, IMD itself should however take the lead in ecologically sound behavior on its own campus too.

In 2007, IMD will invest Sfr.3 million in a more sustainable cooling system which will reduce the school’s use of fossil fuels and thus its carbon emissions. In addition, IMD will “offset” its carbon emissions - primarily from travel and use of electricity and natural gas on campus - by an annual donation to the Carbonfund.org Foundation, a non-profit organization that supports climate-friendly projects. Carbonfund.org promotes climate change education, carbon offsets and green power, and it supports efforts by individuals and businesses to reduce the threat of climate change. In 2007, it will spend IMD’s donation on a reforestation project in India and Nepal. Over 8000 trees will be planted, which will offset the 2700 tons of CO2 that IMD generates. In addition to reforestation, future targets for IMD’s donations may include renewable energy and energy efficiency projects.

Peter Lorange, IMD President, comments:

”The environment is of great importance to IMD’s learning partners, as it is for IMD itself. We want to demonstrate our commitment to reducing greenhouse gases by joining the carbon offset program run by Carbonfund.org. As far as we are aware, we are the first business school to take the decision to offset all of our carbon emissions. However, we know offsetting is not enough. We aim to further reduce our consumption of fossil fuels too. In 2007 we will be installing a cooling system that uses cold water from Lake Geneva (from a depth of 40 meters, where the temperature of the water is constant at 7°C all year long) to cool the buildings on our campus. This new system replaces a traditional system that operates on gas and CFCs. In addition, IMD’s CSM forum will of course continue its research into corporate social responsibility, which includes supporting our partner companies in developing strategies and products that take the environment into account.”

Michael Yaziji, IMD Professor of Strategy, adds:

Earth Day Network and Carbonfund.org Partner to Offer Carbon Offsets for Events

WASHINGTON, DC – Earth Day Network and Carbonfund.org have launched an international effort to encourage Earth Day 2007 organizers and anyone else putting together an event to make their gatherings carbon neutral.  The new partnership is part of Earth Day Network’s three-year Climate Change Solutions Campaign which is also the theme of its Earth Day 2007 efforts. 

“Offsetting the carbon emissions created by our Earth Day events and other events year-round is an easy and affordable step,” said Earth Day Network President Kathleen Rogers.  “And there are thousands of Earth Day events, so this will have a huge positive impact on the environment the weekend of April 22nd, and then hopefully year-round.”

Earth Day event organizers can read about the new program on Earth Day Network’s website,http://www.earthday.net, and then simply calculate the anticipated carbon emissions from their event, and make a donation to offset their emissions.  Other events which may be offset include weddings, family gatherings, vacations and conferences.

Carbonfund.org uses the carbon offset donations to fund carbon reduction projects, such as wind farms, methane generated electricity, solar power, and energy efficiency.

Program Spans All Products, Product Distribution and Field Marketing Team, Entire Company to Comply by 3rd Quarter 2007

BEAVERTON, Ore. (March 8, 2007) – Leading the outdoor industry’s vehicle rack category, Yakima, an innovator in vehicle rack solutions for boats, bikes, winter sports gear, home storage and cargo options, today unveiled “Planet Payback,” a company-wide initiative focused on offsetting the carbon footprint (reducing carbon dioxide emissions) of all operations, products and their distribution, as well as Yakima’s field marketing team, “Road Warriors.” Yakima has partnered with the Carbonfund.org Foundation as its offset provider for this business initiative.  The remaining corporate activities of the company will become carbon neutral by third quarter 2007.  Yakima will launch “Planet Payback” tomorrow at Canoecopia (http://www.rutabaga.com/canoecopia), the world’s largest consumer paddlesport expo in Madison, Wisc., March 9-11, 2007. 

To begin this process, Carbonfund.org calculated Yakima’s annual energy usage and determined its associated carbon dioxide (CO2) emission footprint. Yakima will make donations to Carbonfund.org and completely offset its carbon footprint with support for carbon reducing, climate-friendly programs. The donated dollars will support Yakima’s choice of three different types of carbon offset projects including: renewable energy (wind, solar, and biomass energy), energy efficiency (reduction of energy use through improved technology), or reforestation (planting trees). Yakima will begin making donations after the program launches and will continue donating to Carbonfund.org on a regular timetable. On a yearly basis, Carbonfund.org’s project portfolio is audited by Environmental Resources Trust (ERT), one of the leading green house gas assessment and verification group in the United States. 

“The outdoor playground is critically important to all of us, and it is not replaceable”, said Jerry Heinlen, CEO of Yakima.  “Our Planet Payback initiative not only gives us a clear sustainability plan, but also, enables our associates, consumers and channel partners to team up with Yakima to support the very important goals of carbon reduction and sustainability.  We want to do our part to reduce our carbon footprint, minimize our impact on the environment, and engage others to do the same.  Carbonfund.org has an excellent track record and we believe they will be a strong partner in Yakima’s Planet Payback initiative.”

Yakima will offset the carbon footprint of all products sold into retail and will offer consumers the opportunity to designate which types of carbon offset programs they would like Yakima to support, by registering their purchases online at http://www.yakimapayback.com. This stand-alone website provides information, tips on how consumers can reduce their personal carbon footprint and a carbon calculator for figuring out their own daily/annual carbon emissions. Additional marketing support includes Yakima “Carbon Neutral” stickers on all packaging, as well as a variety of point-of-purchase materials for retailers’ in-store use. The program will be supported with advertising in Backpacker, Bicycling and Outside magazines.

In conjunction with “Planet Payback,” Yakima’s environmental efforts already include: using up to 100% recycled paper and water-based dies to prevent pollution; not using white cardboard, which contaminates water processing facilities with chlorine; and recycling lock core packages sent back by customers. In addition, Yakima’s cargo boxes are made of up to 80% recycled ABS plastic. Unused plastic from the cargo boxes, the boxes themselves and the aluminum and steel parts are all recyclable, as well as the steel tubing and plastic fairings on Yakima’s cargo baskets and the plastic and steel parts on all hitch products.

“Carbonfund.org was a logical choice based on their selection of different types of certified offset projects and strength in validation by respected third party auditors,” said Mike Steck, senior director of marketing at Yakima. “It is important for Yakima’s donation to benefit a genuine carbon dioxide reduction effort, where we can illustrate significant benefits at the end of each year. Due to Carbonfund.org’s non-profit status, 93% of our donations will go directly toward Carbonfund.org’s mission, including offset projects.”

After introducing “Planet Payback” for its products, Yakima will prepare for the third quarter when the entire company plans to go carbon neutral by offsetting emissions from corporate office electricity usage, employee travel expenses, etc. Yakima’s long-term plans incorporate further evaluation of processes and materials to determine how to continue to reduce carbon emissions into the environment.

JACQUES WHITFORD GOES CARBON NEUTRAL

 

 

Saint John, New Brunswick (June 6, 2007) – Jacques Whitford, one of Canada’s largest environmental science and engineering firms, has taken a major step forward in reducing its carbon footprint through a new partnership with the Carbonfund.org Foundation, a leading provider of carbon offset programs.

As of June 1, all of Jacques Whitford’s operations and facilities must now become carbon neutral through a combination of conservation efforts and the purchasing of carbon offsets through Carbonfund.org. The non-profit foundation verified the work Jacques Whitford’s did to analyze their carbon footprint and recommended investments in carbon-reducing projects such as renewable energy, alternative energy and energy efficiency.

Jacques Whitford is the first major environmental engineering firm to join Carbonfund.org’s CarbonFree™ program. With more than 1,600 employees in 45 offices, Jacques Whitford is demonstrating how larger organizations can minimize their carbon footprint.  Jacques Whitford ‘s annual footprint is 8,501 metric tons of carbon which, when offset, is equal to taking 1,840 passenger cars off the road for a year.

Mr. Janowitz was appointed to the position last year and since then has built a strong network of advocates throughout the company, which has offices across Canada, the United States and the United Arab Emirates. 

An important part of that work was the creation of a multidisciplinary team of Jacques Whitford scientists and engineers. Together they analyzed the company’s existing greenhouse gas emissions, evaluated options for change and investigated investments in carbon offsets.  The next step is the development of a long-term business plan, which will enable Jacques Whitford to meet the highest standards of energy efficiency, environmental performance and sustainability.
