Since its inception in 1987, Mountain Rose Herbs has maintained a commitment to provide high quality and organic health products to its customers, with a focus on “people, plants and planet.”

Part of this commitment extends to the company’s ongoing broad and successful sustainability program, which includes reductions in energy consumption and support of renewable energy sources, and a program to neutralize any remaining carbon emissions it cannot eliminate.

Over the past ten years, Mountain Rose Herbs has offset 2208.15 metric tons of greenhouse gases – that’s almost 5 million pounds or the equivalent of carbon dioxide sequestered by 1,810 acres of forests in one year. The company’s entire annual carbon footprint, including shipping, customer service, executive travel, distribution, etc., is offset through the Carbonfund.org.

“Mountain Rose Herbs has made it a priority to reduce our carbon footprint with our newly installed solar array and partnership with Carbonfund.org,” explains Alyssa Lawless, Director of Sustainability at Mountain Rose Herbs.

In 2015, Mountain Rose Herb installed over 100 photovoltaic solar panels to generate electricity for the main facility in Eugene, Oregon. The 25 kWh solar array installed on the roof will produce an estimated 32,604 kWh of power in the first year, saving money and investing in renewable energy. Over the expected 35 year lifespan of the system, it is anticipated to offset 470 tons of CO2, which is equivalent to the conservation of 10,980 trees or 48,170 gallons of gasoline. And for MRH employees, the company installed a two dock electric vehicle charging station, continuing to innovate and reduce its overall carbon footprint.

Energy conservation is paramount at Mountain Rose Herbs. Their facility was constructed to LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) standards and uses Energy Star appliances.  Mountain Rose Herbs is proud to have converted to 100% renewable energy by transferring its conventional electrical power usage to renewable energy sources, credits, and development.

The average American is responsible for 10 tons of CO2 emissions annually through their direct energy use at home, driving and flying. However, the average American is responsible for about 23 tons of CO2 when you also include their purchases, activities and the other services we all share throughout the economy.

While most people and businesses can reduce energy use by improving the efficiency of their homes and offices, buying cars that get better gas mileage and making other changes, reducing it to zero through individual actions is nearly impossible. Carbon offsets are a cost effective way to reduce the remainder of one’s climate footprint, and companies like Mountain Rose Herbs continue to lead the way in operational sustainability.

It takes continuous effort to manage and reduce carbon emissions associated with running a business.  Long-term Carbonfree® Business Partner Mountain Rose Herbs takes this commitment to operational sustainability very seriously and has made great progress to “reduce what you can, offset what you can’t™” year over year.

Mountain Rose Herbs offers high quality organic bulk herbs, gourmet spices, loose leaf teas, essential oils, herbal extracts, and natural body care ingredients, including certified organic, fair trade, ethically wild harvested, and Kosher certified botanical products, through its online store.  The company’s primary facility was constructed with LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) standards and relies heavily on natural lighting. Energy demand was further reduced by making a complete lighting upgrade to energy-efficient bulbs in principal facilities and installing Energy-Star rated heating and cooling systems.

In addition, Mountain Rose Herbs upgraded all computers to those with Gold Star ratings for energy conservation, minimal shipment packaging, and elimination of environmentally harmful materials, as well as more energy-efficient flat screen monitors. The company converted all electrical usage to a local Green Power program to ensure that a significant portion of electricity comes from wind and solar sources.

Even with all of these efforts, management at Mountain Rose Herbs recognizes that the company still produces carbon emissions. Since 2008, they’ve worked with Carbonfund.org to measure and offset these unavoidable emissions by supporting clean energy and carbon reduction projects such as a wind farm in India, a methane collection plant in New York, and Carbonfund.org’s forest conservation work in Brazil.  To date, the company has neutralized over 4 million pounds of carbon emissions, equivalent to taking 400 passenger cars off the road for a year!

Carbonfund.org applauds Mountain Rose Herbs for its long-term and continuous commitment to sustainability and is honored to partner with the company to help achieve its goals.

It seems only fitting that a business that depends entirely on organic and natural herbs, flowers, and medicinal plants would maintain a strong commitment to environmentally responsible business practices.  Carbonfree® Business Partner Mountain Rose Herbs sets a high standard in this regard and has made significant steps in following Carbonfund.org’s motto of “reduce what you can, offset what you can’t™” by lessening its energy consumption prior to neutralizing their remaining annual operational emissions with Carbonfund.org.

Mountain Rose Herbs’ primary facility was constructed with LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) standards and relies heavily on natural lighting.  Energy demand was further reduced by making a complete lighting upgrade to energy-efficient bulbs in their principal facilities and installing Energy-Star rated heating and cooling systems.  In addition, Mountain Rose Herbs upgraded all their computers to those with Gold Star ratings for energy conservation, minimal shipment packaging and elimination of environmentally-harmful materials as well as more energy-efficient flat screen monitors.  Mountain Rose Herbs converted all electrical usage to their local Greenpower program to ensure that a significant portion of their electricity comes from wind and solar sources.

Despite all of these energy-saving measures and efficiency enhancements, Mountain Rose Herbs still generates a measurable annual carbon emissions footprint from its business operations.  In order to neutralize these annual operational emissions, Mountain Rose Herbs has partnered with Carbonfund.org for the past four years to measure and offset these unavoidable emissions by supporting Carbonfund.org’s clean energy and carbon reduction projects.

"If we are to move past coal and look forward to a greener future that is full of alternative energy, then we must support the endeavors of Carbonfund.org, who are creating the infrastructure necessary to make it happen," states Shawn Donnille, Vice President of Mountain Rose Herbs.

We applaud Carbonfree® Partner Mountain Rose Herbs for pursuing a meaningful commitment to environmentally-conscious business operations, measuring and neutralizing their annual carbon emissions, and supporting our clean air technology projects.
