Carbonfund.org and Amtrak Partner to Allow Passengers to Offset Carbon Emissions from Train Travel

Silver Spring, MD, December 17, 2007 – Carbonfund.org and Amtrak are pleased to announce that every passenger traveling with Amtrak now has the option to offset the carbon emissionscaused by their train trip, making what is already a green travel decision even greener.

Choosing to travel by rail is already a greener travel option, per passenger mile, than travelling either by car or plane. The average CO2 emissions per passenger mile travelling by rail are .18kg, compared with .21kg for car travel and .35kg for air travel. See a comparison of the carbon emissions caused by rail, car, and plane travel here.

“Rail travel is already recognized as a more sustainable travel option in countries around the world. We hope this partnership with Amtrak will lead people to take a second look at choosing rail travel in this country, too.” Carbonfund.org Executive Director Eric Carlson said. “Amtrak is helping to make an extremely sustainable travel option even greener for millions of people. We’re pleased to have Amtrak join us in leading the fight against global warming.”

“By choosing to travel by rail, Amtrak passengers are already a step ahead because the carbon footprint generated by their trip is smaller than that of most other modes of transportation,” said Roy Deitchman, Vice President, Environmental Health & Safety for Amtrak. “Because it is more energy efficient, traveling by rail contributes less per passenger mile to greenhouse gas emissions than either cars or airplane. Rail travel also helps to reduce highway congestion in major urban centers.”

In addition to other energy-saving initiatives, Amtrak has committed to a 6 percent reduction in carbon dioxide emissions from its diesel locomotive fleet from 2003-2010. Amtrak is a member of the Chicago Climate Exchange.
