earth day

It’s been a busy Earth Week, and it finally culminates today and through the weekend with many Earth Day events planned. Find an Earth Day Event in your community, get involved, go green and help save our planet!

Looking for inspiration? Here are a few of the great events and service projects of some of our Carbonfund partners:

The City of Savannah, Georgia hosts Earth Day Savannah 2011 on April 23 in Forsyth Park. The 2011 theme is “Conserve, Recycle, Grow” to emphasize the importance of creative reuse and environmental conservation. The Festival, with over 80 exhibitors, will be held 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.  The annual Earth Day Festival is a central part of the City of Savannah’s year-round environmental activities. It is the largest Earth Day environmental-education and outreach event in Georgia.

The morning’s RecycleRama helps residents recycle items that cannot be disposed of or placed in regular recycling pick-ups. The 3-hour special recycling event averages 700 cars, and last year, the collection included 8500 gallons of paint, 1000 tires, and over 270 pounds of unused or expired medications. As part of Earth Day Savannah’s RecycleRama, Bethany Jewell, Founder of Ethos LLC, a local Savannah climate consultancy, is offsetting the greenhouse gas emissions from all those idling cars through Carbonfund.org.

Need some new kicks? PlanetShoes.com extended Earth Day to Earth Month with its plant-a-tree matching donation to Carbonfund.org’s Million Tree Challenge. During April, any customer making a purchase on PlanetShoes.com can choose to plant a tree for $1 and earn a 15% discount on their purchase (discount ends at midnight on April 22nd), and PlanetShoes.com will match their tree-planting donation. Be sure to check out their Daily Catch one-day sale items as well.

Drexelius Chocolates offers its customers some simple tips to go green on Earth Day. Follow their simple tips and enjoy some of the best chocolate available, with free shipping on orders over $25.

Investment management firm Silver Lake continues its environmental stewardship by offsetting emissions related to their annual meeting again this year. The firm has expanded its investment strategies to include a focus on innovation in the energy and natural resources sector. In addition, many of Silver Lake’s employees dedicate their time and energy towards philanthropic activities. In addition to employees’ direct community involvement, Silver Lake makes monetary donations to charitable organizations that its employees choose each year. Over the past several years, Silver Lake employees elected to make donations to more than 100 charitable organizations across a broad range of missions including education, research, support and community outreach, environmental protection, public policy advocacy and human & animal rights.

And Girl Scouts Troop 5020 is already busy at work on a project for Earth Day 2012! The Cadettes of Troop 5020 are working on their Silver Award, which is the highest award a Cadette Girl Scout can achieve. As part of the Silver Award, the troop will be hosting an Earth Day 2012 event geared to Girls Scout between the ages of 6 and 13. The event will provide activities and information regarding the damage being done to our earth and what we can do to help. Event attendees will be encouraged to bring in change to create donations going to Carbonfund.org’s Million Tree Challenge.

Every year in the United States, 147 million gallons of gasoline evaporate due to loose, damaged or missing caps. That’s enough to fill the tanks of almost eight million sedans, according to the National Resources Defense Council. For what you’re paying for gas these days, it’s worth it to make sure you’re not letting it disappear into thin air.

While you’re at it, save on gasoline and the environmental impact it has when combusted into our atmosphere by picking up a few of these efficiency tips:

  • Maintenance – Keep your car tuned up and running efficiently.
  • More Maintenance – Replace your air, oil and fuel filters according to schedule.
  • Tires - Keep your tires properly inflated (just this can save 400-700 pounds of CO2 per year).
  • Drive better - Studies have shown up to 30% of the difference in miles per gallon (MPG) is due to driving habits alone.  You could save more than a ton of CO2 per year by:
    - Accelerating slowly and smoothly
    - Driving the speed limit
    - Maintaining a steady speed
    - Anticipating your stops and starts
  • Make your next vehicle a fuel-efficient one – Check out EPA’s Green Vehicle Guide for info on miles per gallon as well as EPA SmartWay® certified vehicles, meeting rigorous air pollution and greenhouse gas emissions standards.
  • Household fuel efficiency – If your household has two cars and one is used mostly for commuting, make the commuting car a real gas sipper if you can’t for both.

We know many Carbonfund.org supporters celebrate the earth 365 days a year, but this Friday the 22nd our friends and neighbors are joining in the national observance of Earth Day. This week we’ll be sharing a tip each day to suggest some new ways and green ideas to help incorporate sustainable practices into our day-to-day routine.

Tonight is the first night of Passover, the Jewish holiday commemorating the exodus from Egypt. As you set up your seders, here are some tips to make it a green evening:

  • You were expecting us to tell you to wash your dishes rather than throw away disposables, right? Well, Passover is all about asking questions, so we’re going to throw some variables your way instead. GreenResearch has an interesting article looking at energy impact. For example, the energy involved in manufacturing a glass cup and washing it 15 times is the same as manufacturing 15 paper cups. Click here to see how glass stacks up against disposables according to their research.
  • Should Elijah’s cup runneth over, it’s always best to be runneth-ing with sustainable wines. Pair your matzah and brisket with a Pinot Noir or Cabernet Sauvignon from Benziger Family Wines. Their vineyards are tended with Biodynamic, organic and sustainable farming methods, and they deliver in all 50 states.

With deforestation today accounting for about 20 percent of global warming, Carbonfund.org is challenging individuals and businesses to help plant a million trees while raising awareness about the importance of tree planting and reforestation in solving climate change. For $1 per tree, the Carbonfund.org Million Tree Challenge provides an opportunity for action on global warming leading up to Earth Day on April 22nd.

MTC_treeIndividuals and businesses can make a tax-deductible donation toward tree planting at: www.carbonfund.org/trees. The campaign lets donors choose how many trees they wish to have planted. An individual can, for instance, make a donation to plant a tree for each family member, or each mile in a daily commute. A business can plant a tree for each employee, or each sale made.

Carbonfund.org’s Million Tree Challenge Launch Partners include: Staples, Amtrak, Motorola, Hyundai, and Mac-Gray, each making an early commitment to the campaign. For example, Staples will be collecting $1 donations from customers at its U.S. stores from April 18-24, 2010, and will match customer donations raised during this time, up to $20,000. Companies that have also made commitments include: Evogear, WeddingWire.com, Planetshoes.com, WVO Management, and the Maryland GreenHawks basketball team.

“Supporting Carbonfund.org with the Million Tree Challenge helps positively impact our climate, and serves as a concrete way to help educate others about sustainability,” said Mark Buckley, Vice President, Environmental Affairs, Staples. “Staples has been contributing to the climate change cause through energy conservation, green building design, and renewable energy purchases. In addition, by using recycled paper as the standard in our Copy & Print Centers, offering a wide selection of green paper choices in our stores and on Staples.com, and providing technology recycling services, Staples makes it easy for our customers to make a difference for the environment, what we call EcoEasy.”

Amtrak will be promoting the campaign on their Whistle Stop online community for passengers, and to their Amtrak Guest Rewards program members. “Passenger rail is a travel mode that produces some of the lowest greenhouse gas emissions per passenger mile. Amtrak is taking steps using new technologies, fuels and procedures to further reduce emissions. We support tree planting as a great personal step to incrementally reduce greenhouse gas emissions,” said Roy Deitchman, Vice President, Environmental Health & Safety for Amtrak.

Please join the challenge today – make a donation to plant trees at: www.carbonfund.org/trees, or email trees@carbonfund.org to learn more about the campaign.

Thanks!
