US Seeks Climate Legislation Before Copenhagen Conf.

Speaking at a forum on clean energy and climate change hosted by Rep. Ed Markey at MIT, Carol Browner, director of the White House Office of Energy and Climate Change, called for climate legislation in advance of international climate change talks in Copenhagen this December.
Rep. Markey also noted that the House of Representatives ought to vote on legislation before the August recess, in order for legislation to be signed into law before Copenhagen.

Browner said that the U.S. needs climate legislation to help “re-establish the United States as a leader” in clean energy production and fighting climate change.
“It is the strong preference of the administration that we secure legislation,” Browner said. “Copenhagen and the position we can take will be driven by what we are prepared to do domestically.”
