Our partner, JetBlue, supports several projects each year but has always pointed a large portion of its support toward the Tensas project. Going on its third year, my friends at JetBlue plan to join us in a visit to the reforestation site in January, take the chance to see several stages of planting, and get a hands-on view of what their leadership and support has created over the years.

Much of our work here at Carbonfund.org happens behind a desk; the opportunity to visit the projects reminds me of how important the support for these projects is. But they aren’t stopping there. Recently my friend at Credo, Liza Nobel, pointed me toward a new section of Credo’s site that she and many others helped develop. It’s called Real Green and shows you the ways Credo walks the walk, and I’m happy to talk about it. Check it out to see how Credo has supported progressive groups, pushed Congress on important issues by mobilizing millions of people, and led the industry as one of the greenest mobile carriers.

The ski industry’s heightened awareness of climate change effects means many in the industry are finding ways to be part of the solution. Evogear is no exception. Evogear feels very strongly that reducing its impact on the natural environment is important and they show it by taking action. Starting in 2006 they began a partnership with Carbonfund.org to reduce their carbon footprint, including offsetting all CO2 emissions from their Seattle retail store, their offices, and their employee commutes as well. They also make it simple and easy for their customers to be able to take action on climate change solutions. Their program gives customers the option to help offset the environmental impacts of shipping products by putting a donation box on their online checkout. To date, they have raised enough to offset over700 metric tons of CO2. That’s equivalent to reducing the CO2 emissions from 79,455 gallons of gasoline.

We need to keep winters cold not just for our skiing but also for our environment! Evogear understands this and is helping to blaze the way by reducing what they can and offsetting what they can’t. Thanks Evogear!

Our partner VW agrees, and its billing branch VCI launched a campaign at the beginning of November to reduce the number of paper statements sent out each month by encouraging its customers to switch to an online paperless system.  On top of promoting a reduction in paper use, the “Drive Paperless” promotion is contributing $1 to the VW Forest project to support carbon offsets for each traditional paper statement that a person enrolls into VCI’s paperless statement system, up to the goal of $20,000; this will offset 2,000 metric tons of carbon dioxide and help plant thousands more trees.

Starting in 2007 Carbonfund.org and VW developed the Carbon Neutral Project, an industry leading reforestation project that offset the emissions associated with more than 80,000 VWs sold at that time.  The VW Forest project has continued to set high standards in the world of carbon offsets, and we’re proud to say our partner VW is continuing to set trends in reducing what they can.

VW is promoting solutions by encouraging its customers to switch to an online paperless system. Last week Volkswagen Credit (VCI) announced the launch of their program “Drive Paperless” with Carbonfund.org. For each traditional paper statement that a person enrolls into VCI’s paperless statement system, VCI is contributing $1 to the Volkswagen Carbon Neutral Project, up to the goal of $20,000. This will offset 2,000 metric tons of carbon dioxide and help plant thousands more trees. In less than a week they’ve accomplished almost 20% of this goal which is going to fund their work with the reforestation project in Tensas, Louisiana.

Coal isn’t helping our sagging economy by slashing American jobs year after year.  Additionally, it’s a dirty energy of the past that survives because of government subsidies and tax breaks.  Alternatively, wind energy demonstrates that it increasingly provides jobs for our country.  Wind and coal are not even on a level playing field due to the unfair amount of support dirty energy sources receive, but wind energy is becoming more and more price competitive despite that disadvantage.  More importantly, it’s a smarter choice because it doesn’t continue to pollute our environment, and most of all (drum roll please) it won’t run out!  For me, this is a no-brainer.

We need energy to run our businesses and live our lives; it’s a simple fact.  But if we want to provide a strong quality of life for our future generations – and heck, to ourselves when we grow old – we have to switch gears to clean energy sources and switch gears fast.  The numbers tell us a story, and I believe we can make this transition before it’s too late!

For almost 30 years now CarbonFree® Partner LightHawk has helped members of the media, decision-makers, community members and researchers see the environment from a different perspective. By offering an aerial perspective on critical issues LightHawk educates their influential passengers and changes hearts and minds by showing a different perspective on humans’ effect on the environment. LightHawk also engages in a wide variety of scientific missions to protect the wild creatures of our planet. (Check out the recent falcon flights)

The view from above speaks for itself, providing clarity on issues ranging from the effects of urban development in the US, to illegal mining in countries of Central America. In 2008 they held a CarbonFree® Event offsetting over 90 metric tons of CO2. This year they’ve moved the venue so that it’s now in the city. Being seven miles closer to the city than last year means almost 5,000 people will be driving nearly 14 miles less to get to the event. That’s a great way to reduce the event’s carbon footprint. The LayFlats Art and Music Festival will be a great place to hear, see and participate in music and art.
